Today I feel like someone used the Five Point Palm Exploding Heart Technique on each of my limbs, rendering them completely defunct and obsolete. I shout at them to move but they offer me no recourse. I think they are upset at me about last night.
I’ve told myself for years that I’m going to take a self defense class at some point in my life. This has always been known to me as my Batman Quest, because deep down, who doesn’t want to be a crime fighter in a mask? Really, I just thought it would be cool to learn something new, and get in better shape doing it.
Years ago, my brother practiced Tae Kwon Do, and another friend of mine took Jiu Jitsu. While they both seemed to enjoy their respective choices, I wasn’t sure if either of those martial arts were for me. After asking around a bit, I settled on Krav Maga, which is Israeli self defense. Everything I read about it made it sound both brutal and awesome.
I had my first class yesterday and it absolutely destroyed me, hence the earlier discussion of my body’s many protestations as I try to live. Even my time running a half marathon in January couldn’t prepare me for how sore I am today. Anyway, despite the pain, I loved it and I want to go back. Maybe one day my Batman Quest will be complete.
If you’re unaware of the techniques, there are some cool Krav Maga video demonstrations online.
Also, an additional nerd confession. One of the reasons I picked Krav Maga is because Sam Fisher uses it in the latest Splinter Cell game. I felt it would be prudent to leave this information out of my pre-class interviews with instructors. Sometimes he breaks TVs or sinks with people’s heads, but I doubt I’ll learn that.
