I can’t quite pinpoint the time or the date, but sometime early last year I decided that it was time for me to lose weight. There were several factors that lead me to this conclusion, the least of which was the fact that I was on the verge of collecting several moons to orbit my person day and night as I slowly rotated about my ever-growing axis. I was Galactus, devourer of worlds that would satiate what was apparently a 3500 calorie a day diet. If you’re unaware, that’s a lot of calories, considering the average person needs about 2000 a day.

So, I did something I had never done in my entire life. I dieted. I dieted hard. I’ve always been the kind of guy that makes fun of people on diets. “Those poor, lowly dorks,” I would say to myself. “Counting calories and monitoring their food intake- ha!” Well, that was exactly what I started doing, and I’d say that a year later, the results are pretty telling. My initial weight is unknown to me, though after I had lost a few pounds my first weight-in registered at 300 pounds, almost on the dot. Over the weekend, I finally broke the 50 pound barrier, making my weight loss account to a grand total of 52 pounds.

As is both cliche yet still awesome, I’ve put together a little before and after picture.

Before and After

This is a bit of a congratulatory post, but getting rid of an unwanted guest is hard work. The only thing I can compare it to is some sort of bizarre exorcism. Trying to remove a small person worth of weight is no small task, and really takes a complete lifestyle change if you want to do it and make it stick. I’d like to think that’s what happened, but only time will tell.

Lots of people ask how it’s done, but really there’s not a magic pill. I wish there was. The main thing was just cutting down how much I was eating, and making better choices several times a day. Add that to running/biking several times a week and eventually it takes its toll on the big ol’ fortress. The goal is to lose another 20-30 pounds over the next few months. Hopefully I can update about that around when I’m finishing Seven Sons.
